Name Cooper River Bridge Project
Location Charleston / Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

Description 2.5 mile bridge structure.

Bridge will replace two existing, structurally deficient bridges connecting Charleston and Mount Pleasant.

Sponsor South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank (SCTIB)
Cost $650 million
Type of Finance
  • $215 million TIFIA direct loan
  • $325 million SCTIB revenue bonds
  • $110 million federal & other sources
Revenue Sources SCTIB revenues, namely:
truck registration fees
loan repayments
Project Delivery / Contract Method Design-build

Physical Status Expected to open to traffic in Summer 2005. Required contract completion date July 2006.
Financial Status  
Innovations Largest single construction contract in SCDOT history. First project-specific seismic design criteria in state. Partnership with City developed to mitigate community impacts.
